Today we contemplate and re-live in the liturgy the outpouring of the Holy Spirit sent by the risen Christ upon his Church; an event of grace which filled the Upper Room in Jerusalem and then spread throughout the world.
But what happened on that day, so distant from us and yet so close as to touch the very depths of our hearts? Luke gives us the answer in the passage of the Acts of the Apostles which we have heard (2:1-11). The evangelist brings us back to Jerusalem, to the Upper Room where the apostles were gathered. The first element which draws our attention is the sound which suddenly came from heaven “like the rush of a violent wind”, and filled the house; then the “tongues as of fire” which divided and came to rest on each of the apostles. Sound and tongues of fire: these are clear, concrete signs which touch the apostles not only from without but also within: deep in their minds and hearts. As a result, “all of them were filled with the Holy Spirit”, who unleashed his irresistible power with amazing consequences: they all “began to speak in different languages, as the Spirit gave them ability”. A completely unexpected scene opens up before our eyes: a great crowd gathers, astonished because each one heard the apostles speaking in his own language. They all experience something new, something which had never happened before: “We hear them, each of us, speaking our own language”. And what is it that they are they speaking about? “God’s deeds of power”.
In the light of this passage from Acts, I would like to reflect on three words linked to the working of the Holy Spirit: newness, harmony and mission.
1. Newness always makes us a bit fearful, because we feel more secure if we have everything under control, if we are the ones who build, programme and plan our lives in accordance with our own ideas, our own comfort, our own preferences. This is also the case when it comes to God. Often we follow him, we accept him, but only up to a certain point. It is hard to abandon ourselves to him with complete trust, allowing the Holy Spirit to be the soul and guide of our lives in our every decision. We fear that God may force us to strike out on new paths and leave behind our all too narrow, closed and selfish horizons in order to become open to his own. Yet throughout the history of salvation, whenever God reveals himself, he brings newness and change, and demands our complete trust: Noah, mocked by all, builds an ark and is saved; Abram leaves his land with only a promise in hand; Moses stands up to the might of Pharaoh and leads his people to freedom; the apostles, huddled fearfully in the Upper Room, go forth with courage to proclaim the Gospel. This is not a question of novelty for novelty’s sake, the search for something new to relieve our boredom, as is so often the case in our own day. The newness which God brings into our life is something that actually brings fulfilment, that gives true joy, true serenity, because God loves us and desires only our good. Let us ask ourselves: Are we open to “God’s surprises”? Or are we closed and fearful before the newness of the Holy Spirit? Do we have the courage to strike out along the new paths which God’s newness sets before us, or do we resist, barricaded in transient structures which have lost their capacity for openness to what is new?
2. A second thought: the Holy Spirit would appear to create disorder in the Church, since he brings the diversity of charisms and gifts; yet all this, by his working, is a great source of wealth, for the Holy Spirit is the Spirit of unity, which does not mean uniformity, but which leads everything back to harmony. In the Church, it is the Holy Spirit who creates harmony. One of Fathers of the Church has an expression which I love: the Holy Spirit himself is harmony – “Ipse harmonia est”. Only the Spirit can awaken diversity, plurality and multiplicity, while at the same time building unity. Here too, when we are the ones who try to create diversity and close ourselves up in what makes us different and other, we bring division. When we are the ones who want to build unity in accordance with our human plans, we end up creating uniformity, standardization. But if instead we let ourselve be guided by the Spirit, richness, variety and diversity never become a source of conflict, because he impels us to experience variety within the communion of the Church. Journeying together in the Church, under the guidance of her pastors who possess a special charism and ministry, is a sign of the working of the Holy Spirit. Having a sense of the Church is something fundamental for every Christian, every community and every movement. It is the Church which brings Christ to me, and me to Christ; parallel journeys are dangerous! When we venture beyond (proagon) the Church’s teaching and community, and do not remain in them, we are not one with the God of Jesus Christ (cf. 2 Jn 9). So let us ask ourselves: Am I open to the harmony of the Holy Spirit, overcoming every form of exclusivity? Do I let myself be guided by him, living in the Church and with the Church?
3. A final point. The older theologians used to say that the soul is a kind of sailboat, the Holy Spirit is the wind which fills its sails and drives it forward, and the gusts of wind are the gifts of the Spirit. Lacking his impulse and his grace, we do not go forward. The Holy Spirit draws us into the mystery of the living God and saves us from the threat of a Church which is gnostic and self-referential, closed in on herself; he impels us to open the doors and go forth to proclaim and bear witness to the good news of the Gospel, to communicate the joy of faith, the encounter with Christ. The Holy Spirit is the soul of mission. The events that took place in Jerusalem almost two thousand years ago are not something far removed from us; they are events which affect us and become a lived experience in each of us. The Pentecost of the Upper Room in Jerusalem is the beginning, a beginning which endures. The Holy Spirit is the supreme gift of the risen Christ to his apostles, yet he wants that gift to reach everyone. As we heard in the Gospel, Jesus says: “I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Advocate to remain with you forever” (Jn 14:16). It is the Paraclete Spirit, the “Comforter”, who grants us the courage to take to the streets of the world, bringing the Gospel! The Holy Spirit makes us look to the horizon and drive us to the very outskirts of existence in order to proclaim life in Jesus Christ. Let us ask ourselves: do we tend to stay closed in on ourselves, on our group, or do we let the Holy Spirit open us to mission?
Today’s liturgy is a great prayer which the Church, in union with Jesus, raises up to the Father, asking him to renew the outpouring of the Holy Spirit. May each of us, and every group and movement, in the harmony of the Church, cry out to the Father and implore this gift. Today too, as at her origins, the Church, in union with Mary, cries out:“Veni, Sancte Spiritus! Come Holy Spirit, fill the hearts of your faithful, and kindle in them the fire of your love!” Amen.

Papa Francesco nella Messa di Pentecoste: no a particolarismi e cammini paralleli alla Chiesa, affidatevi allo Spirito Santo
Vincere la paura, rinunciare a schemi e sicurezze, per aprirsi agli orizzonti di Dio. E dire no a particolarismi, esclusivismi, cammini paralleli che portano divisioni. Così Papa Francesco nell’omelia della Messa di Pentecoste, celebrata questa mattina in una piazza San Pietro gremita dai pellegrini di movimenti, nuove comunità, associazioni, aggregazioni laicali di tutto il mondo, giunti a Roma in occasione dell’Anno della Fede. 70 tra cardinali e vescovi e 400 sacerdoti hanno concelebrato la liturgia. Novità, armonia, missione: tre parole che esprimono l’azione dello Spirito Santo, che “sprigiona il suo dinamismo irresistibile, con esiti sorprendenti”. Così Papa Francesco riflettendo sulla “effusione dello Spirito Santo operata da Cristo risorto sulla sua Chiesa”. “Un evento di grazia che ha riempito il cenacolo di Gerusalemme per espandersi al mondo intero”.
Gli apostoli nel Cenacolo a Gerusalemme “colpiti nella mente e nel cuore” da “segni precisi e concreti”, un fragore improvviso dal cielo, quasi un vento impetuoso e lingue infuocate che si posano su di loro, vengono colmati di Spirito Santo, cominciano a parlare alla folla, in altre lingue dalla loro, delle grandi opere di Dio. Tutti fanno un’esperienza nuova. Ma noi siamo pronti a questa novità?“La novità ci fa sempre un po’ di paura, perché ci sentiamo più sicuri se abbiamo tutto sotto controllo, se siamo noi a costruire, a programmare, a progettare la nostra vita secondo i nostri schemi, le nostre sicurezze, i nostri gusti”.
“E questo avviene anche con Dio. - ha osservato il Papa - “Lo seguiamo, lo accogliamo ma fino a un certo punto; ci è difficile abbandonarci a Lui con piena fiducia, lasciando che sia lo Spirito Santo l’anima, la guida della nostra vita, in tutte le scelte”: “Abbiamo paura che Dio ci faccia percorrere strade nuove, ci faccia uscire dal nostro orizzonte spesso limitato, chiuso, egoista, per aprirci ai suoi orizzonti”.
Ma “la novità che Dio porta nella nostra vita è ciò che veramente ci realizza, - ha ricordato Francesco - ciò che ci dona la vera gioia, la vera serenità, perché Dio ci ama e vuole solo il nostro bene”.“Non è la novità per la novità, la ricerca del nuovo per superare la noia, come avviene spesso nel nostro tempo”.
Da qui l’interrogativo: “Siamo aperti alle 'sorprese di Dio'? O ci chiudiamo, con paura, alla novità dello Spirito Santo? Siamo coraggiosi per andare per le nuove strade che la novità di Dio ci offre o ci difendiamo, chiusi in strutture caduche che hanno perso la capacità di accoglienza? Queste domande, ci farà bene, anche, farle durante tutta la giornata".
E se lo Spirito Santo sembra creare disordine nella Chiesa, portando diversità dei carismi, dei doni, tutto ciò “sotto la sua azione – ha spiegato il Papa - è una grande ricchezza, perché lo Spirito Santo è lo Spirito di unità, che non significa uniformità”, ma armonia. Ma solo lui può operare in tal modo.“Anche qui, quando siamo noi a voler fare la diversità e ci chiudiamo nei nostri particolarismi, nei nostri esclusivismi, portiamo la divisione; e quando siamo noi a voler fare l’unità secondo i nostri disegni umani, finiamo per portare l’uniformità, l’omologazione.”
“Il camminare insieme, guidati dai pastori, che hanno uno speciale carisma e ministero, è un segno dell’azione dello Spirito Santo”, ha ricordato Francesco ai fedeli dei movimenti e associazioni e comunità di tutto il mondo.“E’ la Chiesa che mi porta Cristo e mi porta a Cristo; i cammini paralleli sono tanto pericolosi!”.
Quindi il monito: “Non ci si avventura oltre la dottrina e la Comunità ecclesiale”.“Chiediamoci allora: sono aperto all’armonia dello Spirito Santo, superando ogni esclusivismo? Mi faccio guidare da Lui vivendo nella Chiesa e con la Chiesa?”.
E, lo Spirito Santo è anche “l’anima della missione”:“Lo Spirito Santo ci fa entrare nel mistero del Dio vivente e ci salva dal pericolo di una Chiesa gnostica e di una Chiesa autoreferenziale, chiusa nel suo recinto”.
“La Pentecoste del Cenacolo di Gerusalemme è l’inizio, un inizio che si prolunga”, ha concluso Francesco con un ultima domanda:
“Chiediamoci se abbiamo la tendenza di chiuderci in noi stessi, nel nostro gruppo, o se lasciamo che lo Spirito Santo ci apra alla missione. Ricordiamo, oggi, queste tre parole: novità, armonia, missione".

Novidade, harmonia e missão: Papa Francisco na homilia da Eucaristia de Pentecostes na Praça de São Pedro

Imensa a multidão participa, neste domingo de Pentecostes, na Praça de São Pedro, a Missa presidida pelo Papa Francisco, com mais de 200 mil peregrinos de variados movimentos e realidades eclesiais, provenientes de tantos países do mundo. Uma grande diversidade de línguas, povos e nações, irmanados na unidade da fé da Igreja. A iniciativa deste encontro partiu do Conselho Pontifício para a Nova Evangelização, no âmbito do Ano da Fé, desejado por Bento XVI.
Novidade, harmonia e missão foram os três aspectos da acção do Espírito sublinhados pelo Papa na homilia.
“A novidade causa sempre um pouco de medo, porque nos sentimos mais seguros se temos tudo sob controle, se somos nós a construir, programar, projectar a nossa vida de acordo com os nossos esquemas, as nossas seguranças, os nossos gostos. E isto verifica-se também quando se trata de Deus.”
Muitas vezes – sublinhou o Papa - seguimos e acolhemos Deus só até certo ponto; sentimos dificuldade em abandonar-nos a Ele com plena confiança, deixando que o Espírito Santo seja a alma, o guia da nossa vida, em todas as decisões. “Temos medo que Deus nos faça seguir novas estradas, faça sair do nosso horizonte frequentemente limitado, fechado, egoísta, para nos abrir aos seus horizontes. Mas, em toda a história da salvação, quando Deus Se revela traz novidade, transforma e pede para confiar totalmente n’Ele”.
Não se trata – esclareceu o Papa - de seguir a novidade pela novidade, a busca de coisas novas para se vencer o tédio, como sucede muitas vezes no nosso tempo. A novidade que Deus traz à nossa vida é verdadeiramente o que nos realiza, o que nos dá a verdadeira alegria, a verdadeira serenidade, porque Deus nos ama e quer apenas o nosso bem. Perguntemo-nos a nós mesmos: “Permanecemos abertos às «surpresas de Deus»? Ou fechamo-nos, com medo, à novidade do Espírito Santo? Mostramo-nos corajosos para seguir as novas estradas que a novidade de Deus nos oferece, ou pomo-nos à defesa fechando-nos em estruturas caducas que perderam a capacidade de acolhimento?”
Passando ao segundo ponto – a harmonia, o Papa Francisco observou que “à primeira vista o Espírito Santo parece criar desordem na Igreja, porque traz a diversidade dos carismas, dos dons. Mas não. Sob a sua acção, tudo isso é uma grande riqueza, porque o Espírito Santo é o Espírito de unidade, que não significa uniformidade, mas a recondução do todo à harmonia. Quem faz a harmonia na Igreja é o Espírito Santo… Só Ele pode suscitar a diversidade, a pluralidade, a multiplicidade e, ao mesmo tempo, realizar a unidade.”
“Quando somos nós a querer fazer a diversidade fechando-nos nos nossos particularismos, nos nossos exclusivismos (observou o Papa), trazemos a divisão; e quando somos nós a querer fazer a unidade segundo os nossos desígnios humanos, acabamos por trazer a uniformidade, a homogeneização. Se, pelo contrário, nos deixamos guiar pelo Espírito, a riqueza, a variedade, a diversidade nunca dão origem ao conflito, porque Ele nos impele a viver a variedade na comunhão da Igreja”. E aqui o Papa deixou uma advertência contra o risco de abandonar a comunidade eclesial para seguir “caminhos paralelos”: “O caminhar juntos na Igreja, guiados pelos Pastores – que para isso têm um carisma e ministério especial – é sinal da acção do Espírito Santo; uma característica fundamental para cada cristão, cada comunidade, cada movimento é a eclesialidade”.
Finalmente, sobre a missão, Francisco recordou que “os teólogos antigos diziam: a alma é uma espécie de barca à vela; o Espírito Santo é o vento que sopra na vela, impelindo-a para a frente; os impulsos e incentivos do vento são os dons do Espírito. Sem o seu incentivo, sem a sua graça, não vamos para a frente. O Espírito Santo – insistiu - faz-nos entrar no mistério do Deus vivo e salva-nos do perigo de uma Igreja gnóstica e de uma Igreja auto-referencial, fechada no seu recinto; impele-nos a abrir as portas e sair para anunciar e testemunhar a vida boa do Evangelho, para comunicar a alegria da fé, do encontro com Cristo.” “O Espírito Santo é a alma da missão. O sucedido em Jerusalém, há quase dois mil anos, não é um facto distante de nós, mas um facto que nos alcança e se torna experiência viva em cada um de nós… É o Espírito Paráclito, o «Consolador», que dá a coragem de levar o Evangelho pelas estradas do mundo! O Espírito Santo ergue o nosso olhar para o horizonte e impele-nos para as periferias da existência a fim de anunciar a vida de Jesus Cristo. Perguntemo-nos, se tendemos a fechar-nos em nós mesmos, no nosso grupo, ou se deixamos que o Espírito Santo nos abra à missão.”No final da Eucaristia do Domingo de Pentecostes o Papa Francisco recitou a oração do Regina Caeli e dirigiu-se a todos os Movimentos, Associações e Comunidades eclesiais que durantes os dias de Sábado e Domingo celebraram na Praça de São Pedro a Festa do Pentecostes. O Santo Padre referiu-se mesmo a um Cenáculo ao ar livre que reviveu a experiência da Igreja nascente em oração com Maria Mãe de Jesus, também na diversidade dos carismas.
" Revivemos a experiência da Igreja nascente, em oração com Maria, Mãe de Jesus. Também nós, na variedade dos carismas, experimentamos a belezaz da unidade, de ser uma coisa só. E isto é obra do Espirito Santo, que cria sempre de novo a unidade da Igreja."
O Santo Padre agradeceu a todos os que participaram nas celebrações do fim-de-semana, Vigília e Eucaristia, agradecendo sobretudo aqueles que que vieram a Roma vindos de tantas partes do mundo. "Levai a força do Evangelho! Tende sempre a alegria e a paixão pela comunhão na Igreja! Que o Senhor esteja sempre convosco e que a Nossa Senhora vos proteja!"
